I often get asked (on the regular) where I buy my clothes and how do I look so “put together”. So here we are…this has been a “plan” for myself for a long time, and I’m finally going to commit to doing this blog thing and sharing what I wear and where I get my stuff.
I love clothes. I’ve said that before. I love getting dressed (in the morning, before we go out, anytime really). I love putting on loungewear to chill at home, changing into cute pj’s before bed and my most favourite is getting dressed for date night. My favourite season for clothes is fall – I’m sure I am not alone in that. You can’t beat the cozy knits and boots in all forms accompanied with the warm colours of the changing leaves.
I own what you call a capsule wardrobe. I have key base items that I wear with almost everything and I lightly incorporate some trendier pieces into it with the changing of seasons. I actually don’t buy that many clothes (despite what my husband’s perception is*eyeroll*). I like to invest in quality pieces that I can wear many times with many things, you get maximum bang for your buck that way. I also find it’s pretty easy to look put together when everything in your closet looks great with everything.
These are some key pieces I have in my wardrobe that I legit wear all the time. They are super versatile and have withstood the test of time. I consider all of these pieces classics.
These are so awesome….like so so awesome. I actually own 3 pairs because that’s how often I pull these babies out (and I am not the best at staying on top of the laundry sitch in our house). Order a size up for comfort but they are beyond flattering – they suck in everything but don’t make you feel like your getting suffocated by a boa constrictor. Worth.It.
My favourite most favourite sweater. So flattering and cozy. I have the white and wine coloured ones and I have a very intense urge to purchase black…it’s that good. If your less than 5’6” you’ll be lucky enough to be able to wear it as a super cute sweater dress with OTK boots as well as front tucked in your favourite jeans or just as intended – a tunic with leather-look tights & camel booties. This sweater fits large so order a size down from your regular size.
Everyone should own a camel coloured coat. You instantly look polished and put together…it’s incredible actually. This is a piece that you will pull out year after year and camel coloured anything never goes out of style.
A moto jacket is as essential in your closet as a jean jacket is. This type of piece looks incredible with jeans, leggings, skirts and even dresses. I wear mine all the time. It’s the perfect way to add a little texture and edge to your outfit.
This is obvious. Everyone should own a jean jacket and if you don’t…well, I don’t know how you don’t. Length should be flattering to your own individual body type and I personally prefer a mid wash. This outfit is perfect and I personally wear a version of it at least once a week…so put together but comfy, perfect for running around.
More camel is always a yes. I have owned slight variations of this booty for 6 years now, classic is an understatement. Looks amazing with cuffed jeans, faux leather leggings and even more formal attire like dresses and skirts.
Jean trends fluctuate (flares are coming back…I don’t know how I feel about that), but a classic mid or dark wash skinny is flattering on every body type. Invest in a good body hugging pair, that makes you feel amazing and has a bit of stretch in it. I would personally rather have 1 pair of jeans that I wear all the time than 10 pairs of jeans that don’t fit well or loose their shape after wearing them for an hour. It legit takes me months to find a good pair of jeans – don’t be afraid to keep looking until you find your
A pair of white runners…dress down jeans, those faux leather leggings again and even dresses and skirts (there is a theme here…). Some prefer Adidas Superstars, I prefer chucks myself – they are super super easy to clean and keep bright white (I take out the laces, wipe down the white sole with a Mr Clean magic eraser and soak them in an Oxi-Clean bath in the sink for a couple hours, then I throw in the washing machine. Air dry on the counter).
Wear alone under any one of the jackets I have already listed or under a cardigan, with any type of bottom, everyone should own a white (and while your at it a black one as well) camisole. Tuck it in or let it be, a good quality camisole should be in everyone’s closet.
This is an item that is essential to me and one that I invest money into. I wear these almost daily. I have what I consider basic colours – black, camel, wine and grey and then I buy on-trend colours at Marshalls or Winners to feel “updated”. Regardless of price-point, cardigans are priceless.
These are my basics, I base all of my outfits on 1 or more of these components. It’s easy to build a capsule wardrobe with these key pieces and incorporate your own flair or personal style into your outfits with accessories like jewelry, scarfs, bags and hats.
Stay true to yourself, wear the colours that you love and feel most confident in (regardless of trends) and I cannot stress this enough **focus on if a piece FITS well NOT what size it is**
We all get caught up in sizing (I myself have been guilty of purchasing my “size” online just for it to arrive and not be anywhere close to fitting my body). Every manufacturer has slightly different measurements. If you do the majority of your clothing purchases online like I do, take your measurements and look at the size chart, read the reviews in regards to sizing and order what the size you need to feel and look awesome.
The key to looking good in anything you wear is confidence!
